This is a unique opportunity for our students to take a trip to a museum 100 miles away in a few seconds. Once there, they spend time with a scientist or other instructional expert and ask questions while discovering answers for themselves with materials and manipulatives sent to our school. Then, they return to their classroom to continue with their school day. My group leaned about black bears. I learned that when a bear's skat had berries in it, they ate blueberries. The second thing I learned was if the black bear's skat is green, the bear is close by - watch out! If it is brownish, it is gone. The third thing I learned was that all the food that the bears eat makes the scat look different. Black bears are meat eaters and plant eaters. I learned a lot about black bears.
James

Today my classmates and I went to a videoconference with Mrs. McDermon. My group learned about squirrels. A flying squirrel can't fly. Instead, it glides. Gray squirrels eat nuts. They eat small nuts. Flying squirrels are nocturnal. They are the size of a hamster. A squirrel has a bushy tail. It leaves scat behind. I love animals.
Charlotte

Today my class and the computer teacher had a videoconference. We talked about animal tracks. My groups talked about raccoons. They can use their sharp claws to open doors. Raccoons are different colors. If you come across a raccoon, you might want to stay away. They are not pets. In the conference we shared about the animal we studied. There was a really big TV so we could see the lady at the Museum. The lady told us information about the animals, and and we had big numbers so we could answer her questions. My number was 20. The people in my group were Joseph, Ashley, and Nathan. Once the conference was over we left. We wrote these stories in our class. I had a great time.
Isaiah

Today my class went to a videoconference with Mrs. McDermon. I learned about a squirrel. A flying squirrel gobbles around the nut in a circle. A flying squirrel can glide, not fly. They glide and use their tail to steer. I love videoconferencing!
Harmony

Today my class went to a videoconference to learn about animal tracks and signs. My group leanred about owl pellets. Owls throw up what it eats. The large owls eat big animals like cats and skunks. The small owls eat snacks, birds, and mice. I love videoconferences!
Grace

Today my class and I went to a videoconference. I was in the raccoon group. A lot of people were in my group. I learned they can open a door and untie knots. It was very interesting. I love science.
Nathan

Today I went to a videoconference. It was about animal tracks. My group was group "D." My group and I learned that owls can't eat skeletons, fur, or bones. The baby owls go outside to cough up a pellet. I like videoconferncing.
Christian

My group was the raccoon group. I learned that a raccoon can turn a door handle and they like to eat cans and fish. They only have five fingers and one looks like a thumb.
Ashley

Today my class had a conference. My group was the squirrel group. Squirrels are mammals. Flying squirrels do not fly, they glide. Squirrels have bushy tails. Flying squirrels steer with their tails. Squirrels hibernate the winter. I love squirrels. Tori

Today my class went to a videoconference. Flying squirrels are good flyers and they glide. Flying squirrels can see good at night because they are nocturnal. Flying squirrels eat nuts. Flying squirrels are cool. Flying squirrels are very very cool. If you see a pile of broken nuts near a tree, that's where they ate.
Casey

Today my class went to a videoconference with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. I learned about bear scat. Bear scat is bear poop. You can tell what the bear was eating by looking in the scat. The people in my group were Cameron and James. All three of us learned that when scat is green, that means the bear is close by and when it is brown, that means that the bear is gone (far away). I like black bears!
Jason

Today we went to a videoconference. We had to sit in groups and the people in my group were Nathan, Isaiah, Ashley, and me. I learned about raccoons. They can open trash cans and doors.
Joseph

Today my class went to a videoconference. My group was the gall. A gall is a lump on a plant stem. The gall drills its way through the wood. The larva grows inside. There are many kinds of larvas. Ours was on the stick. When you find a larva it may have a hole in it. That tells you that the baby has already come out.
Brock

Today our class went to a videoconference. My group learned about a stick called a gall ball. A moma fly will lay an egg inside the gall and put it on a leaf. when the baby is ready to hatch, it will chew its way through the gall. The gall is not the stick, it is the ball in the middle. It is cool how the gall doesn't make the leaf fall down off the tree. Our videoconference was fun.
Brittany

Today my class went to a videoconference. We had a videoconference about animal tracks. My group and I learned about the gall ball. A gall is an egg that a special kind of fly made. the special fly lays the gall on a stick. I hope I get to do this again.
Austin

Today my class went to a videoconference. We went to Mrs. McDermon's room. My class and I learned about owl scat. I would like to tell you about it. An owl eats too much and it will barf it up. It barfs up the bones, feathers, and hair. Big owls eat big animals, like skunks. Small owls eat small animals like mice and birds. Some owls live in barns, and some in trees, and other places. I like learning about owls.
William

Today I went to a videoconference. I want to tell you what I learned about owls. Owls can't swallow bones, fur, claws, and tails. So instead of swallowing it, it barfs it up. I think that is so gross! Really I do. The throw up is called pellets. When the owl swallows a bone, it's stomach does a really wierd thing - it's belly wraps the bone in fur and then barfs it up. Do you think it's wierd? Owls are cool!
Amy

Today, Mrs. Gentry's class had a videoocnference with Mrs. McDermon. It was about Animal Tracks and Signs. My group was the black bears! The people in the group were James, Jason, and me. You can tell if a bear has pooped and it is close by or if it is far far far away from the scat! When black bears scat is green it is fresh; then it turns to light black and next it turns dark dark black in color. After that it turns brown like a dead flower. You can tell what it ate - if it has seeds - it ate berries. It it is just black, it ate meat. I know a lot about black bears now and their scat. I love black bears. They are amazing!
Cameron

My class went to a videoconference with Mrs. McDermon and let me tell you about it. Did you know that larger squirrels like fox squirrels and gray squirrels crush large nuts? Flying squirrels eat the tops out of nuts.
Zack

Pittsburgh Public Schools Megaconference 3

If it does have seeds in it, it probably eats blueberries, raspberries, apples, and every other wild foods. The squirrel is another animal that I like. Actually, I like all animals.

Animal Tracks
by Melanie
Yesterday our class went to the videoconference. Today our class talked about animal tracks. I learned that a raccoon has five toes and that a raccoon uses it's front paws to open things. I learned an owl cannot break down or digest bones or fur so he spits it up.

Animal Tracks
by Jacob
Yesterday we had a videoconference. Our group was learning about squirrels. we learned about the Eastern fox squirrel and gray squirrels and flying squirrels. A flying squirrel is nocturnal. They gnaw on nuts.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 131px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Z6S4g8PssGk/SZM_orETOQI/AAAAAAAAAYM/C64oRqy8IQs/s200/tracks4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301651154333284610" />Animal Tracks
by Darrell
Yesterday I went to a videoconference. I learned about squirrels. I learned about the flying squirrel and the gray squirrel. The gray squirrel eats hickory nuts. It chops the top off, but doesn't eat the bottom. And, squirrels have little pouches. It can carry 3 or 4 kinds of foods. I like to learn about squirrels.

Animal Tracks
by Noah
Yesterday I had a videoconference about animal tracks. My group had bear scat, which is poop. I learned that scat can help you track animals. I really like bears.

Animal Tracks
by Ronald
I went to the videoconference. It was fun. My group was the galls. We learned about snakes, too. They leave snake skin behind. I love animals. Fruit flies nibble a hole in the tree. Then they lay eggs in the tree. Now, let's talk about owls. Owls are nocturnal. That means owls sleep in the day. Owls stay up at night. I love owls. They are fun.

Animal Tracks
by Max
Yesterday my class had a videoconference. What I learned is that the gray squirrel eats pine cones and nuts. The eastern fox squirrel only eats pine cones. They flying squirrels eat hickory nuts. I learned a lot about squirrels.

Animal Tracks
by Steven
I learned owl throw-up is called owl pellets. Pellets are hair and fur and bones, too. Owls fly quietly and quickly. Owls make sounds like this: whooo whooo. Owls can not eat hair and things like that.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Z6S4g8PssGk/SZM_GINaKSI/AAAAAAAAAX0/NAB6-mP70DE/s200/tracks1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301650560860694818" />Animal Tracks
by Franklin
I learned that raccoons can open doorknobs and their finger looks like a thumb and the raccoons are nocturnal. I learned that owls can turn their heads almost all the way around. I leaned that snakes leave their skin and they get a new skin.

Animal Tracks
by Mac
My group learned about bear scat. Bears have seeds in their scat.

Mrs. Hicks' Class - NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Tropical Connections
by Brianna
The monarch butterflies fly south for the winter because it gets too cold for them to fly. The male monarch butterfly is much larger than the female monarch. The butterflies that come back to NC are the great, great grand children. They go from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico. It eats nectar from flowers and stores it as body fat. Some butterflies go to find some milkweed so they can lay their eggs. Some of the monarch butterflies predators are birds, snakes, and owls. They migrate because they might freeze to death. Some monarch butterflies go to the tropics to lay their eggs. But some don't make it. The tropics of Capricorn and the tropics of Cancer are on the sides of the equator.

Tropical Connections
by NyGeil
The tropics and NC are very close. We have one part of the tropics close to us and it's called the Tropics of Cancer. Some animals migrate to the tropics for the winter, but they come back for the summer. The tropics have habitats: rain forest, cloud forest, dry tropical forest, and a coral reef and a savannah. Their animals migrate over to NC, too. There animals are: Indigo Bunting, Monarch Butterfly, the ruby-throated hummingbird, a humpback whale and a loggerhead turtle. The name of the other tropic line is the Tropics of Capricorn. The equator separates the tropic lines.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird
by Justin
what I learned about the tropical connection is that the ruby-throated hummingbird lives in North Carolina. In the winter the hummingbird travels to South America. The hummingbird is green. On their neck they have a red spot. The females can have up to two eggs. Some hummingbirds take the route across the ocean or go through Texas. I love the hummingbirds.

Tropical Connections
by Emilee
Today in the distance learning classroom we learned about Tropical Connections. The tropics are on both side of the equator, between the Tropics of Cancer and the Tropics of Capricorn. Norch Carolins is common to the animals of the tropics ; what we have in common is that the animals migrate so some of the animals spend the winter in the tropics and come back to North carolina fo rthe summer. Tropical habitats are the rain forest, coral reef, and the savannah. Animals that migrate from the tropics to North Carolina are the Indigo Bunting, Monarch Butterfly, ruby-throated hummingbird, humpback whate, and the loggerhead turtle. My group learned about the humpback whale. We had a model of a humpback whate and a piece of the whale's vertebra. We presented and I held the whale's vertebra; Nichols held the whale, Cory read, and Dieante held the map. The lady we were working with had a possum, a frog, and butterfly. That was the best videoconference ever.

Tropical Connections
by Lydia
I learned that animals migrate. I learned that the ruby-throated hummingbird migrates and comes back in the summer. The monarch butterfly migrates to Mexico in the winter. The tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are on both sides of the equator. Humpback whales do migrate. We saw a little paw; it was so cute. There was a little frog that was white with black spots. I really had fun.

Tropical Connections
by Isaiah Smalls
I learned that animals migrate and one of them is the Indigo bunting. It has a dark blue head and small back; it's body is light blue. Indigo buntings travel to Mexico and the Caribbean. When Paige and I had to do an Indigo bunting we did not know what it was. Then we found out it was a bird. If a bird wants food, it goes to land because if it goes to the ocean there is no food. An Indigo bunting finds its way by looking at the stars. In the middle of the globe are the tropics of Capricorn and the tropics of Cancer. The equator is in the middle. That's what I learned about the tropics. Everybody did a good job.

Videoconference
by Dillon
Today we had a videoconference on equators. One thing we learned was that there are two lines--one of each side of the equator. But the big thing we learned is that animals live in the tropics and come to North Carolina. Some of them are the long necked snapping turtle, the ruby-throated hummingbird, the humpback whale, the monarch butterfly, and the indigo bunting. It was amazing to learn about all of those animals. we learned that bright colored animals are poisonous sometimes. And those other animals don't need to mess with bright colored animals because the animal will kill the other animal. Now I will tell you the real names of the tropics, the tropic of Capricorn and the tropic of Cancer.

Tropical Connection
by Corey
My group was the humpback whale. we got to hold a vertebra--it was awesome1 I had my best friends, Emilee and Dieante and Nicholas in my group. I got to read and Dieante held the map. Emilee held the pictures and Nicholas held the map. Humpback whatles eat plankton and shrimp. Some humpback whales jump out of the water and do tricks. Then they dive back into the water. It makes a BIG splash! Then we learned about a plant. Ours was Spanish moss off of a tree. The birds and spiders use the moss for their nests. It will not harm the birds and spiders. I really enjoyed the videoconference.

Monarch Butterfly
by Paige
The monarch butterfly flies to South America because it is hot there and it is colder in North Carolina. If they fly across the ocean, they need to prepare themselves for the long trip. If they fly across the ocean without food, they will die. Most butterflies go over land because they can stop and eat. When it is summer again, they come back. Some butterflies are brown when they open their wings. There are two sprouts and it looks like two owl eyes. When they land on a tree it looks like an owl. The animal falls fo rhte trick. They get scared and run away. I learned a lot aout the monarch butterflies. I think butterflies are really interesting.

My Videoconference
by Robert
today my class and I had a videoconference about tropical connections. I learned that there is a tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. My group presented the ruby-throated hummingbird. I was the speaker. Taylor held the animal, Justin drew on the map, and Kindall held the map. Emilee's group showed the humpback whale. Cody's group did the loggerhead turtle. Brianna's group presented the monarch butterfly. Paige's group showed the indigo bunting. The woman showed us a tropical dart frog and an owl butterfly. When an owl butterfly puts its wings straight, it looks like an owl. That's how I think it got it's name. I learned that a dart frog is poisonous. It eats this special kind of ant that made it poisonous. We had these questions with a picture inside. My group had a snapping turtle. Dieante's group had some Spanish moss. Jamie's group had a possum. Isaiah's group had a tree grog. Brianna's group had a milk snake. I learned so many things about tropical connections that I don't want to hear that word again! ha ha

Tropical Connections
by Taylor
When our class went to a videoconference it was about tropical creatures. My group had the ruby-throated hummingbird. Hummingbirds fly south for the winter. They go to Mexico. They have their babies between North American and Mexico. The tropics are near the equator. There are two tropic lines, the Tropics of Capricorn and the Tropics of Cancer.

Tropical Connections
by Danielle
Some things that I learned yesterday was that a type of bird finds it's way by the stars. The humpback whale is as long as a school bus. I also learned that a humpback whale eats shrimp. A monarch butterfly male has dark lines and a dark shade of color. A female butterfly has light shade of colors. Also a monarch butterfly is black and orange. It seems like most tropical animals are black and another shade of color. A ruby-throated hummingbird got his name because his neck and throat are red. A milk snake is red, white, and black. An indigo bunting has a long beak. My group did a monarch butterfly and a milk snake. Spanish moss grows in the forest and it hangs over trees and other plants. A ruby throated humminbird flys near Mexico for the winter.

Tropical Connections
by Jamie
Today we went to a videoconference about the tropics. They are near the equator from the Tropic of Cancer to the tropic of Capricorn. The animals migrate, so some spend the winter in the tropics and return to NC in the summer. The indigo bunting, monarch butterfly, and ruby-throated hummingbird, and humpback whale, and loggerhead turtle, and Spanish moss. I love learning about tropical connections. Me, Dillion, Cody, and Jermaine had a loggerhead turtle. Emilee, Dieante, Corey and Nicholas had a humpback whale! Bryson, Brianna, Danielle, Devin had a butterfly.

Ms. Beverly's Class - NC Wildlife Resources

Don't Eat Me
by Olivia
I went to a videoconference with my class. It was about food chains. Food chains are when a plant grows and a little plant eater eats the plant. Then the plant eater gets eaten. The animal that eats that animal gets eaten by other animals and it repeats over and over again. I loved that videoconference!

Don't Eat Me
by Jacob
Today my class had a videoconference. We learned that animals turn into camouflage. Some animals have spray. Animals play dead. They flee away. That was a good videoconference. That was really good. The other animals can blow up bigger.

Don't Eat Me
by Connor
On Monday, my class went to a videoconference. We made a food chain. My group had four animals in it's food chain. Videoconferences are fun and exciting. The predator eats other animals. Prey gets eaten. I learned about a food chain. I liked that videoconference.

Don't Eat Me
by Makakenna
Today our class went to the distance learning classroom. We split up into five groups. All of the groups had a natural treasure. My group had a red cardinal. It is our state bird because it has one of our state colors. The second group had a long leaf pine tree. That tree can survive a fire! The third group had a scotch bonnet; that kind of shell had a sea snail living in it in the ocean. The fourth group had a honey bee. The boy bee doesn’t sting. The fifth group had a box turtle. It can close it’s shell completely.

Kaylie
Today my class went to a videoconference about NC Natural Treasures. After we did some different stuff, we did groups. Table 5 had a cardinal. I learned has a brown color. The female is brown because she has to protect her eggs in the nest. The fourth group had a longleaf pine. We learned that their needles can be 8-18 inches long. I also learned that it can survive through a fire. Group three had a shell. I leaned that sometimes the snail is inside or outside the shell. Group two had a honey bee. I learned that the female bee could sting and the male can’t. The first group had a box turtle. I learned that they don’t go in the water that much. I also learned that they are in the forest a lot. I also learned that girl bees are the workers and the boy bees stay in the hive with the queen. They hang around with the queen which makes her have more babies. I also learned that the longleaf pine has a stem also. They grow in NC. The box turtle can’t close the back of his shell all the way but he can put his head and his feet in his shell. I also learned that you can find a lot of shells along the coast. If there is nothing in a turtle shell that means it is dead.

Tyler W.
Today I went to a videoconference. It was called NC Natural Treasures. I was number 10. We had the Scotch Bonnet. Our videoconference was great. The names of the people in my group were Noah, Kacey, Richard, and Maria. Last we had to come back to the classroom to write about our videoconference. I had a great time there. I wish we had another one like this one. I never had so much fun.

Mark
Today I went to a conference about NC Natural Treasures. I learned that the box turtle can keep his legs, arms, head, and tail in his shell and close it!

Brandon
Today we went to a videoconference about North Carolina treasures. First we went to our seats at tables. Next, the lady from the Museum asked us some questions. Then we worked on the stuff we had at the table. I had a shell of a box turtle. After that we answered the questions. Finally, we put the stuff back and went back to our class.

Nick
Today my class went to a videoconference about NC Natural Treasures. My group had the cardinal. Treona got to talk. She said that the cardinal is our state bird. The next group had long leaf pine trees. The pines were as long as a sheet of paper. It was very fun to see all the groups show; everybody did good.

Cody
Today we had a videoconference with the museum about Natural Treasures. First we had five groups to tell us what it is and why it is important to NC. I learned something; it’s that female honey bees have stingers but the males do not. The bee group said that. The bird group had a cardinal. They said that the cardinal doesn’t fly south in the winter. It stays here in NC. The next group had a shell called a Scotch Bonnet. They said that some turtles stay on land. The pinecones and pine tree group said that the pine tree could not get burned like the other trees.

Tyler
Today I learned about natural treasures in a videoconference. In my group we learned about the red cardinal. We learned that the cardinal’s colors as the same as the state flag’s colors. The next group had long leaf pines. The pine needles can not be burned up. The pine needles have syrup. Then the next group had a honey bee. I learned that the female can sting. The bees help the farmer by pollinating the flowers and plants. After the bee group was the shell group. The shell group had a Scotch Bonnet. It has a sea snail in it. The fishermen find the shells a lot. The last group was the box turtle group. When the turtle is alive, the shell is on it. She showed us a real live turtle.

Marisa
Today we went to a videoconference. We talked about NC Natural Treasures. My group had the box turtle. He doesn’t go in the water, but if he does, he doesn’t stay in there long. He also is the state reptile. Nick’s group had the Cardinal. It does not fly south for the winter, but stays in it’s nest all winter. Haley’s group had the honey bee. I know that the female does not sting. The female stays in the hive and when she leaves everyone does.

Richard
Today my class went to the distance learning classroom for a videoconference about North Carolina Natural Treasures. My group got the Scotch Bonnet. I learned that a sea snail lives in the shell.

Triana
Today our class had a videoconference. Ours was called North Carolina Natural Treasures. I learned that a boxing turtle comes out of its shell when it is a baby. That videoconference was awesome! I hope I can go the Museum someday.

Shiann
Today we had a videoconference. My class learned about North Carolina Natural Treasures. My group talked about honey bees. My group learned that 2000 can fit in a bee hive. Only the female can have the stinger to sting people that swat at them. That makes the female bee mad and then it flys around you and it tries to sting you. But bees do not want to harm you, just sometimes they get scared of people because they think sometimes people want to harm them. So they are more scared of you than you are of them. So bees love people and they don’t want to hurt you and they don’t want you to harm them.

Areli
Today we went to a videoconference. She told us to get our treasure that was in our basket. Ours was a honey bee. The next group had a Scotch Bonnet. The next group had a turtle shell. The lady showed us a turtle. Nick’s group had the honey bee. The next group had a bird that sang when you pressed it. Kelly’s group had a big bush and a stick. It was a long leaf pine. Then we left.

Kacey
Today my class went to a videoconference. It was called NC Natural Treasures. Each group had a treasure in their bag. One group had a long leaf pine. The second group had a honey bee. The third group had a turtle shell. The fourth group had a bird. The fifth group was the Scotch Bonnet. I had a great time. I hope we go again.

Taylor
Today my class went to a videoconference on the NC Natural Treasures. We split up into five groups. There was a pine tree group. There was a Scotch Bonnet group. There was a box turtle group. The last group was my group. My group was the cardinal. Something I learned about the honey bee was that the girl’s sting and the body do not even have stingers. Something I learned about the box turtle group was that the box turtle can close it’s shell all the way up. The bottom part can go up and touch the top part.

Troy
Today we went to a videoconference. We learned about bees, a pinecone tree, and a shell, a bird, and a turtle shell.

Noah
Today my class and I had a videoconference. The name of the conference is NC Natural Treasures. We learned about the Scotch Bonnet. It is shaped like tips in the front where the sea snail is. Then we learned about the box turtles. I learned that the baby box turtle have shells when they are born.

Maria
Today I went to a videoconference. It was called NC Natural Treasures. It was at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. I was number 6. There were five groups. My group was Tyler W., Kacey, Noah, and Richard. There was a bug in the middle of the table. I opened the bag. There was a Scotch Bonnet and some papers about it. I had a lot of fun today.

Audrey
Today my class had a videoconference called NC Natural Treasures. My number was one. When everyone was seated, it began. First the lady on the screen told us her name. I forgot her name, but she was really nice. We started to talk about the venus fly trap. Then when we got finished she told all five groups to open our bags. We had a turtle shell. It was really smooth and there was lots of pictures of the turtle that lived in it. I had a fun time. When it was time to share what came in our bag, the lady on the screen told us to talk. Marissa spoke for our group. I had to help her. When she got finished we said good-by and then my class left.

Marissa
Today we had a videoconference about NC Treasures. First, the cardinal group said that the male had beautiful colors on him that were red. Next, the pine tree group said that they had really long needles. The honey bee group said the bees make honey. The lady at the museum said that the bee that will sting you is not the male bee.

Quinton
Today my class and I went to a videoconference. It was about NC Natural Treasures. There were five groups. Each group had five kids except for my group. They had four kids in my group. My group had the long leaf pine. Group two had the cardinal. It is our state bird.

Haley
A time when my class went to a videoconference was Thursday. My class learned about different insects. My class had fun learning about different insects. When we first got in the room, we sat in chairs in five groups. I was with Shiann and Areli. We had this basket in front of us. It was a basket of papers and pictures. My group had the honey bee. We had to describe the honey bees to the class.

Mrs. Gentry's 2nd Grade - NC Wildlife Resources

Don't Eat Me

Avery
Today I went wtih my class to a video conference. We learned about animal food chains. Every food chain starts with a plant and ends with an animal. I liked the picture of the red wolf because I like wolves. It was fun.

Will
Today my class went to a video conference. We learned athat a food chain is something that begins with a plant. I also learned that a habitat is a place where animals live and that animals need food, water, air, and shelter. I learned that a predator eats other animals called prey. I had a lot of fun. (picture of this foodchain: sun - flower - grasshopper - rat - snake - owl)

Diamond
Today my class went to a video conference. We learned about "Don't Eat Me." The lady on the camera was showing us all kind of things. We learned about animals. We did a food chain. My favorite animal is a wolf. The food chain was fun. First was the plant, then the grasshopper, then the spider, then the frog, then the fox.

Jahsae
Today my class went to a video conference. We were there from 9 to 10 AM. We made a food chain in oder. I learned that a caterpillar tail looks like a snake head. I thought the caterpillar was a snake. My friends thought so, too. I learned animals need water and food to live. I learned that foxes are different colors. The lady showed us a chameleon. It changed colors. I had fun.

Hunter
Today I went to a video conference. We talked about a bunch of animals. We saw a bobcat. The bobcat is my favorite animal in the world. We made a food chain. A food chain is like a chain made out of paper. It has a bunch of animals that are prey and predators.

Itzel
Today my class went to a video conference. It was about an animal eaten by another animal. My favorite animal was a bobcat. The people in my group were David, Nycara, Sarabeth, and me. She showed us a real live lizard. We could see the eyes. It could turn all the way to the back. There were four other groups. All the groups shared their food chains. Then we had to go. I wish I could go there again!

Courtney
Today my class and I went to a video conference and the title was "Don't Eat Me." At the videoconference I learned how to make a food chain. There were bags one to six. Our teacher bag number six. It was really fun. She showed us a pet chameleon. It was really, really cool. She also showed us a picture of a person holding a turtle. She also showed us a picture of a bobcat. I was reallly surprised and very excited and I wanted to pet the bobcat and take it home with me. But I could not. The bobcat blended in with the grass and made herself look camaflouged. I really had fun. I hope I get to go again because I love leanring all about science. My number was number ten. I had a bag and my bag number was number 2. I really had fun!

Brendle
Today my class went to a video conference. It was about animals. We learned how to make a food chain. It shows how predators eat prey. There were bags one to six. The teachers had the sixth bag. My group had a pair of funny glasses. I liked going to the distance learning classroom.

Katie
Today we went to a vido conference. We talked about prey and predators. My favorite animal was a bobcat. What else we learned was about the five senses. She showed us the raccoon and his strongest sense is tasting. Then she showed us some other animals which were rabbits and bees. I learned a lot! It was really fun!

Sam
This morning my class had a video conference. We learned what the food chain was. A food chain is like a plant eating the sun's rays then a rat eats the plant, then a snake eats the rat.

Essence
Today we went to the distance learning classroom for a video conference. We got to do a food chain in order. We did the plant first in the food chains.

Nycara
Today my class went to the distance learning classroom at 10 this morning. When we got there, the teacher went over the rules. The first one was hands in laps. We learned about animals. There was a caterpillar, every one, even me, thought the caterpillar was a snake. I had a group, David, Itzel, Sarabeth, and me. I made a food chain. The grasshopper ate the plant. The spider ate the grasshopper.

Miguel
Today we went to a video conference. We made a food chain. We were talking about animals. All of it was fun. But the most fun thing was when the woman showed us the chameleon.

Sarabeth
Today I went to a video conference. We talked about animals. Everything she probably said, I did not know. We made a food chain of what ate what. This is how ours went: a grasshopper eats a plant, a spider eats a grasshopper, a frog eats a spider, a snake eats a frog, an eagle eats a snake. That was group 15-20. We played a game. We had a bag with a clue. I had fun learning stuff.

Valorie
Our class went to a video conference. We did some games and learned things. We learned about animals. In my group's bag we had teeth. They were not real teeth. THey looked like vampire teeth. My favorite animal at the video conference was the rabbit and the turtle. I learned that a food chain is like an animal eating a plant and another animal eats that animal, and then another animal eats that animal. I learned a lot. I with I can go there again!

David
Today I went to the computer lab. First we saw a fish and a cat. The cat was going to eat the fish. Then the lady came in. I leaned that a bobcat can camaflouge like a bee. I leaned that an eagle eats a snake and a grog eats a spider. I didn't know that animals need water and food to survive.

Shay
My class and I went to a video conference today. We talked about prey and predators. I learned that catapillars are fuzzy and are eaten by birds. We made a food chain. We had strips of paper and tape and made the food chain. It started with the sun and a plant and then the animals.

Jojrin
Today I went to a video conference and learned about animals. Some animals eat other animals. We made a food chain.

Sydney
Today my class went to a video conference. The favorite animal that she showed us was the red wolf. Then we made a food chain and my number was 15. The animals that were on the food chain were a plant, grasshopper, spider, frog, and snake. I leanred that the red wolf was very good at smelling and hearing. It was fun.

Jeremy
I went to a video conference. It was fun. I liked went she showed us the animals. When I saw a bobcat, I was surprised. We had long strips of paper that we made into food chain. We used tape to hold it. We had to do it one at a time. We took turns putting it together. I was happy when I saw the fox. I liked when she showed us the type of lizard and when his eyes moved. I wish I can go again.

Ms. Gentry's Class - October 19, 2007

NC Museum of Natural Sciences - Animal Tracks & Signs

Lilly
We went to a videoconference. It was in the distance learning classroom. Our teacher was on TV in Raleigh. We saw a real snake a real owl. It was so cool. In my group we learned about squirrels. If the acorn has a little hole, then a flying squirrel ate it. If the acorn was crushed up, then a gray squirrel ate it. These are signs. I learned a lot about animal tracks and signs.

Avery
Last Friday, we went to a video conference. It was in the distance learning classroom. A video conference is where there is a person on the TV that can see you and talk to you. It was about animal tracks and signs. Our group had bear scat. We got to feel snake shed. Bear scat is a sign, not a track. From the bear scat, you could see what he or she ate. Also, we got to hold wood from a beaver. I scared my partner because she held the bear scat not knowing it was poop. I hope we go again.

Sarabeth
I went to a video conference in the distance learning classroom on Friday. It was about Animal Tracks and Signs. I took a field trip to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. But I did not really go to the museum. I had so much fun that day. I did not want to leave this room, but I had to anyway. This was my first one all year. It was so fun. It was great!

Sam
Last Friday, we went to a computer conference. That’s where we go to the distance learning classroom. There’s a person in Raleigh who teaches us from a camera wired to a satellite that transports it here. We touched bear poop. But my group had a raccoon track. We also touched snake skin. There was a group with a gall. We got to see a rat snake. We also saw an owl. There was a group with a crushed nut from a gray squirrel and a nut that had the top eaten off by a flying squirrel.

Valorie
Last Friday, our class went to the video conference. My group was about little flys. I learned that when the mama fly lays it’s baby egg on a stem, it makes a kind of sphere. When the babies are grown, they leave the stem. The lady in Raleigh showed a real snake. We got to touch the real snakeskin. She showed us a real owl. Then it was time to go. I hope I get to do it again.

Essence
Last Friday my class and I went to a video conference. My class and I had to raise our numbers to ask questions. My class and I were on camera. My group had nuts and pinecones and a gray squirrel. Our group had a sign. A squirrel left a nut for a sign. I learned this animal, the gray squirrel, crushes the nuts to eat it. A flying squirrel only eats the top. A fox squirrel eats half of the nut. I want to do this again.

Yusif
Last Friday, I went to the distance learning classroom. I was in a video conference and I was talking about the gall to a lady in Raleigh through a little camera. I saw her on the big TV. The gall had a baby fly inside it, but the baby already pooped out of the gall. I read a book about a gall that was inside the basket. That was the real gall and the book was very entertaining and cool. I want to go there again sometime soon.

Will
Last Friday, my class and I went to a video conference and we learned about animal tracks and signs. I had a lot of fun there in the distance learning classroom. My group had little pieces of nuts and a pinecone. Katie’s group had bear scat. Itzel’s group had a raccoon’s footprint. Sarabeth’s group had a gall ball. A gall ball is where a mother fly has had a baby. Then the baby goes to the center and makes a ball.

Olivia
Last Friday, our class went to a video conference. It was in the distance learning classroom. I was in a group with numbers 11-15. If a nut is chewed off the top, it is a flying squirrel. If the nuts are crushed, it is a gray squirrel. Plus if a pinecone is chewed, it is a gray squirrel and a fox squirrel. Other things that we saw were a snake and an owl.

Shay
My class went to the distance learning classroom on Friday. I had bear scat. I think he has been eating blue berries. There were seed in the scat. I learned bear scat is new if the grass is green underneath. I know if the grass is brown that the scat is owl scat. I had fun.

Jeremy
My class and I saw a video conference on Friday. We were talking about animal tracks last Friday in the distance learning classroom. As a science project, I was in the owl group. I had a sign of an owl and mouse. And that owl can gobble their prey and spits out the bone of their prey. Owls eat small animals like mice, baby birds, and cats. Owls can turn their heads left and right, far away. Owls like to sleep in the day in the trees. It stays still until food comes.

Itzel
Last Friday, my class went to a video conference. We were in groups. We had a raccoon footprint. We had this little glass so we could look at the raccoon footprint up close. The teacher showed us an owl and a snake. Then the other groups showed what they had. Next it was time to leave. We said bye to the teacher.

Katie
Our class went to a video conference. We could see a lady on a TV screen. We had to raise our cards that had numbers on it. My number was five on my card. She talked to my group first because we had a smaller number.

Jahsae
Last Friday we went to a videoconference. We went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and sign. Our group had bear skat. It had been eating blueberries. The paper said if the grass is still green under the skat, the skat is fresh and the bear is still nearby. If the grass is brown, the skat is old and the bear has moved on. It took a minute for the lady to hear us. The pictures where the bear aid his skat looked old, so the skat we had was old. It was a model, not real. The lady let us see a real own and a snake. Then we passed around the snake skin that had been shed by a snake. That’s the end of my story.

Cason
Last Friday, my class went to a video conference. We learned about a raccoon. They are mammals. We got to see a real snake. We got to see an owl. My group had a raccoon print. The raccoon can open a trash can and a door. We saw a lady in Raleigh. It was a science museum. I had fun. We said thank you.

Nycara
My class and I saw a blacksnake and a screech owl. The lady was in Raleigh and my group was about an owl. An owl swallows birds, snakes and rats. Then they spit the bones out. My animal group was a sign. My class loved it. So did my teachers. We went on Friday.

Mrs. Hollifield's Class - October 17, 2007

Animal Tracks and Signs
NC Museum of Natural Sciences

Dylan
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. Today I learned about bear poop; when bear poop has green grass under it, that means the bear is near by and when the grass is brown under the bear poop, that means the bear is not close by. Another group had a raccoon track. It had five toes and five claws. Another group had a nut and a crushed nut and a broken pine cone. A flying squirrel put the hole in the nut to eat it. A gray squirrel ate the crushed nut. A gray squirrel ate the pinecone down to a nub, like corn on the cob. Another group had a stick with a knot in the middle where a baby fly lived until it was a grown up.

Audrey
Today my class and I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. There were five groups. Each group had to figure out if it was a track or a sign, what it is, and who made it and what we learned about the animal. Our class learned about how and why snakes shed skin. My group had bear scat. My class also learned that an owl burps out a pellet. The museum lady showed the class a baby owl that was run over by a car. The baby owl was blind.

Zaria
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. We learned what animals eat and leave behind. We learned about an owl who coughed up a pellet and it had bones in it. We saw a nut, broken nuts, and a squirrel. We saw a raccoon track. It was fun.

Kaylie
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. we went to the room to see a videoconference. The lady at the museum showed us a black snake and a real owl that got run over by a car. After that he was blind. She even showed us real bear poop--scat. Then all of us got our items out of the bag and shes asked us questions. We had to answer them and each table picked someone to talk and someone to hold the items. We all had a number to hold up instead of raising our hands. It was fun.

Maria
Today my class went to a videoconference in the distance learning classroom called animal tracks and signs. First, we sat down. Then we read the rules. Then we got the wiggles out of us. Then the big screen came on and a lady was there. Her name was MT. She said good morning and how are you. Then we said good. Then she got out a black snake. Then she said that black snake go on trees and that most snakes don't go up trees. Snakes eat mice, rats, birds and squirrels. Then she got out an owl. Then she said that the owl had been run over by a car and can't see now. Then we got to activity number one. We had bear poop or scat. It ate a sunflower. The scat had seeds on it. Then after that we said good-by.

Tyler L.
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. I learn that an owl puts bones and fur in a pellet and that a snake sheds his or her skin off and under it there is new skin. I learned another thing, the mom fly has her eggs on a stem that makes a gall ball. The egg goes into the plant until it grows. It makes a hole and comes out to be a fly.

Quinton
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. There were five different tables. One was the owl table. Two was the squirrel table. Three was the bear table. Four was the gall ball table. Five was the raccoon.

Brandon
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. We saw a snake and an owl. We got to share what we had and we got to touch snake shed.

Mark
Our class got to learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. I was group 1. I had bear scat. I saw some more groups. One one group had a footprint. I was number 1. I think the bear ate sunflower seeds. The person was a woman from the Raleigh museum. I had me, Audrey, Marisa, Maria, and Dillon in my group. One group had a pinecone and nuts. That was interesting! Because the tree is not hurt! I just go around it. We got to see a real snake and an owl. I had so much fun. I did learn a lot!

Marisa H.
Our class got to go learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. We learned a lot from the videoconference. We had group two and in my group we had bear scat. It was a sign. We saw a real live owl and he got hit by a car so he can't see and that means that he is blind. We also saw a snake and the snake was very wobbly. I learned that if the bears poop is old, then the bear is gone and will not be back again. We also saw a raccoon track from Tyler's group. Marissa's group had a pinecone and nuts and a squirrel. They were opened and eaten by the squirrel. Taylor's group had a kind of stick and a fly laid an egg inside.

Taylor
Our class got to go learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. We sat down at tables. Then we got to work. One of the groups had bear scat. Another group had an owl pellet. My group had a gall ball that a fly lived in when it was a baby. It built a nest in the gall. It will sleep all winter. In spring the fly will wake up and come out of the gall. The other group had a raccoon paw print. The last but not least group had squirrel nuts. One of the nuts had been eaten by a flying squirrel. The nut was crushed by a gray squirrel. Another squirrel ate a pinecone.

Cody
Our class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. The lady showed us a rat snake and an owl, but it could not see. We saw a raccoon's footprint. The most cool one was the squirrel's nuts that was so cool. We do not see the animals alive. In my group I had Triana, me, Tyler, and Taylor. There were five tables. We had a gall ball. It was from a mom fly.

Shiann
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about some cool things. We learned about animal tracks and signs. One thing my class learned was they had an owl that was run over by a car and it couldn't see anymore. So they had to take it to the museum. We learned that owls eat something and they can't stand it, so they throw it up and if you crush it, it will fall apart and the stuff that the owl ate will be in there. The way to find an animal sign is if a snake leaves its skin. You know that the snake is eating well and it grows and that's why the skin falls off. That's why it's so cool to stay in school to learn about animals.

Noah
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. Our class saw a rat snake and a screech owl. They eat do something different. Our class saw the lady hold bear scat. Our class had a good time.

Richard
Today our class went to the distance learning classroom and we learned about animal tracks. I learned that owls throw up their ball and they eat rats and cats and snakes eat rats and bugs leave a bump on a tree branch. I had so much fun there. We got to met a snake. We met a nice lady. My number was 12. My teacher is Miss McDermon. I love snakes.

Kacey
Today I went to the videoconference to learn about animal signs and tracks. Today I saw a snake sign and an owl pellet. The kind of snake is a black snake and the snake eats mice. The lady told us about animal tracks and signs. The lady told us about the animal signs called scat. We had a good time there. We learned all about animals tracks and signs. Then it was time to go. My number was 18. The owl got hit by a car so the lady got to keep it at the museum. My group had the owl pellet. One group had a nut and pinecone.

Marissa
Our class got to go learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. One of the animals was a raccoon. She showed us a beaver, then she showed us some signs where if they eat something and cough it up and if they pooped that will be a sign.

Nick
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. We saw a screech owl and a black rat snake. We saw a raccoon footprint and a half of a pinecone that a squirrel ate. We had a project to keep us quiet. It really worked.

Colton
Our class got to learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. We saw a raccoon track, a snake and an owl. The snake coiled up. The owl couldn't see. We saw bear scat.

Triana
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about animal tracks and signs. Taylor, Cody, and Tyler L. were in my group. Our group learned about a gall ball. A fly lays an egg there. There was a hole in it. One table had bear scat. Oh, and I'll tell you the rest. Another had an owl pellet. One part is when we saw snakes skin on a real snake. My number was 9. There was an owl. It got hit by a car. It can't see now. I feel real bad about it.

Tyler W.
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal tracks and signs. I had a good time at the videoconfernce. We learned about a lot of different things. I had so much fun. We learned about a lot of different animals. She showed us a black snake and things that were all about animals. But soon we had to leave. I had such a good time there.

Areli
Today I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal signs and tracks. She had an owl and snake and each of us had to sit at a table. Each of us had a number. We had to raise our number to the camera. We had a lot of fun. The owl got hit by a car so they had to keep the owl at their museum. The snake was moving around. We had to read the sheets and then we had to leave the classroom.

Mrs. Teague's Class - October 16, 2007

Animal Tracks and Signs
NC Museum of Natural Sciences

John
In the distance learning classroom on October 16, I was with the acorn and nuts and pinecones group. There was a gray squirrel. We had the table with numbers 11-15. The class and I saw a lady. She showed us a snake skin and chewed up wood from a beaver. We saw a black rat snake.

Britney
I know where some tracks are. You have to go to the woods and look closely. The tracks may be hiding in the bushes. The animal may be close to the footprint! I can tell you what kind of track it is. It is a raccoon that left the prints. Mrs. McDermon helped the class in the distance learning classroom. My table and I had the goldenrod gall ball. A fly lays her eggs in the stem. Mice have small feet. A bear's scat is a sign, not a track. It shows if a bear is close by. I had fun learning about animal tracks and signs.

Brizeda
Animal Tracks and Signs are important. There is a raccoon and you can tell by his footprint. At my table we learned about owls, bones, and mice. I had fun when we learned about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom with Mrs. McDermon.

Destiny
We saw bear scat, and we saw a raccoon footprint. Next we saw a bear scat and we saw a snake skin and a live snake. My class saw raccoon scat. Then we saw a flying squirrel. It pooped on the lady at the museum and it bit her. It would not come out of her shirt. The flying squirrel was a pretty one. It was scared. Yesterday was a pretty day and a good day to learn about animal tracks and signs.

Destiny D.
When the grass is green under the bear scat, the bear is around. But when the grass is brown under the bear scat, the bears are gone away. A bear eats purple berries. The gall ball is a stick with a ball on the top. The fly lays their eggs in the side of the gallball. When the flies are ready to come out of the gall ball, they make a small hole. A mouse has a small foot. A mouse has a small body. My table had a bear scat that was hard as a statue. The top was hard. A snake can bite. It has no legs. It can bite. I had fun learning about animal tracks and signs.

Eric C.
Animal tracks are tracks that you can see. You can see tracks in the snow. Sometime you can tell what animal has been there because of the track. You can find tracks anywhere. You will find tracks in mud. The animal sign I learned about is a gall ball. A gall ball is a stem that a fly's been on. It lays eggs there and later eats it's way out.

Eric R.
In the distance learning classroom, I learned about bear scat. The scat was rough. It had seed from berries that the bear had eaten. I also got to touch a snake skin. It was soft. The snake skin was a sign. I had fun learning about signs and tracks.

Franklin
I went to find about tracks and signs. Our teacher passed out a snake skin and beaver stick. The first thing we saw was snake skin and we touched the snake skin. Next thing was the raccoon poop and the squirrel nut. It was round. It also had a tiny hole in the nut. Our table talked about the squirrel. We learned that by looking at the nut we could tell which squirrel had eaten the nut, a gray squirrel or a flying squirrel. It was round. It also had a tiny hole in the nut. Our table talked about the squirrel. We saw a flying squirrel at the museum. I enjoyed learning about animal tracks and signs.

Erica L.
A gall is a place for a fly to lay her eggs. When it is ready to hatch, it chews its way out of the gall. A beaver can easily find a home but sometimes it can make a home with its strong teeth. Beavers chew on tree bark wood. You can find footprints in the woods, in the rain forest, and the desert. When you are finding footprints you're making your own footprints by walking. The lady at the museum took out a live snake and a flying squirrel. The flying squirrel left scat on her shirt! When she tried to get it out of her shirt, it bit her! The rabbits scat is a little like an ice cream dib. The fox's scat is about 2 1/3 inches. I had fun learning about animal tracks and signs.

Garrett
We went to learn about animal tracks and signs in the distance learning classroom. I learned a bear's scat is big and touched snake skin. I had a raccoon footprint. It was little. I learned a lot. I learned not to touch a flying squirrel. We learned about bear's tracks and possum's too. We saw a real squirrel and a real snake. Bears eat purple berries. We learned about a bear's poop. Animals show signs that they have been there. When the grass is green under the poop, then the bear is near by.

Jake
Yesterday, October 16, 2007, my class and I went to the distance learning classroom for a field trip of animal tracks and signs! Animal tracks are something that is left in soil like bear, duck, cat, crane, deer, frog, turtle, beaver, fox, raccoon, dog--all kinds of tracks. Signs are something that you can tell that an animal has been there. Group 1-5 had bear scat. Group 6-10 had a gall ball. Group 11-15 had pinecones and nuts eaten by squirrels. My group, which was 16-20, had an owl pellet. Group 21-25 had a raccoon track. We saw snakeskins, a real live snake, and a flying squirrel! It was great going to the distance learning classroom.

Justin
Rabbit scat is small like a bug. Raccoon scat is big like a big chair. All of the others are small like a bug. When you see some poop, it means an animal is near-by, so if you see poop, you can tell what the animals ate. In the mud where animals go, you will see the footprint, too. The gray squirrel left a big open hole in the nut. The snake was long. Some snakeskin will come off his body, too. My group and I had a footprint. A raccoon's footprint is small. I had fun because I saw a flying squirrel.

Mia
My group studied about a squirrel and nuts. We saw a snake and a flying small squirrel. Our class did not taste because people had their hands on the stuff and we did not want to taste germs. Next, we smelled and felt and touched a snake skin. The lady from Raleigh, North Carolina got the gray squirrel out. It pooped on her shirt. Group 1 talked about bear scat and the bear was eating purple berries. I had fun seeing animals and I had fun.

Marionna
Bear tracks are cool to find. They will lead you to a bear. On the way to the forest you will find some signs. You'll see how big the bear feet are. The raccoon tracks and poop were cool, because you see what they ate and when you find what they eat, put out what they eat. They will eat it again. The squirrels are cool, too. Some are harmless. Some are not. The black flying squirrels are cool. There were pinecones. Our table was # 3. It was fun working with partners in the distance learning classroom yesterday.

Raven
On October 16, my class and I took a trip to the distance learning classroom and looked at a raccoon track, an owl pellet, and some pinecones and nuts eaten by squirrels. Also, we saw a gall ball and bear scat. The raccoon track was smooth. Then we asked some questions. Next, the lady got a snake out and it climbed on her and she put it away. Then she got a flying squirrel out and it pooped on her shirt and it went in her apron. She tried to get it out and it bit the lady from the museum. Finally, she put it away and got the poop off her apron and shirt. We discovered some more about a raccoon's footprint. I had fun because I discovered new things about animals.

Seth
I saw a bear scat with seeds all in it. There were different kinds of grass. They were yellow and green and I think brown. Some people had two nuts that got eaten by a squirrel. Other people had footprints and fossils from a kind of animal, but I don't know what kind of animal. There was the lady at the museum. She pulled out a kind of squirrel and it pooped on her shirt. It was time to go back to class. We said good-bye and lined up. I learned a lot of new things that day.

Sydney
First, we took our spots in the distance learning classroom. Next, a lady told us to get our some objects out of the basket. My group got some owl pellets. Owl pellets are bones and the other things that they can not digest. My group learned a lot and we are really looking forward to go back again. Then we put everything back and came back to the classroom. I had so much fun in the distance learning classroom.

Tyler
Animal tracks and rootprints that bears leave in soft soft soft soil. Signs are things like if a squirrel eats a pinecone, that means that there is a squirrel around or near you. What we had at our table today was scat and it had a lot of berries in it. It was from a bear. Also, it had a really small skull in the owl pellet. In the distance learning classroom, I had a lot of fun. It was fun learning about animals.

What's New

Check this space in August for schedules for our various distance learning opportunities. We also receive satellite programs in science from NASA and the Smithsonian Institution. Rural Hall School also has ip videoconferencing. We use the wonderful resources in North Carolina, such as the NC Musuem of History, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, and the NC School of Science and Math. These sources have live, interactive programs for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They mail materials for our students to use, study, and manipulate during the programs. We also connect by ip with Read Around the Planet and participate in activities through Internet2 and MAGPI.

Northumberland-Heath Primary School in England

On Wednesday, we will participate in our last videoconference this school year. Ms. Throckmorton's 4th grade class is meeting with Ms. Smith's 5-year class from Northumberland-Heath Primary School in England. These two classes met during Read Around the Planet and have been emailing and videoconferencing since March. The students have shared their favorite sports, subjects in school, hobbies, typical day, brothers and sisters, pets, favorite books and authors, and many other things. This is the last week for our students. My group had an owl pellet. There was one owl pellet broken apart and one whole one. Mrs. McDermon broke an owl pellet and found bones to a mouse and put the mouse bones together then she glued it in a empty CD case. One group had acorns and a pine cone. There was an acorn with a big hole in the middle. A flying squirrel bit into that acorn. The lady at the museum on the TV showed a real live flying squirrel! He also had big black eyes. I had a lot of fun, but I also learned a lot, too. I had fun learning about animal tracks and signs.

Christian
February 15, 2007
Yesterday I went to the distance learning classrsoom for a videoconference about animal tracks and signs. My group had a golden-rod gall ball. A gall is a stick called a golden-rod and a special fly lays an egg in it and the baby fly scats and eats. Then a ball grows on the stick. Then the baby digs a hole in the gall and it comes out of the hole it made in the gall and it's a grown-up fly. I had fun at the video conference and learned a lot about animal tracks and signs.

Mitchell
February 15, 2007
Yesterday, we went to the distance learning classroom and learned about animal tracks and signs. My group had an owl pellet and a broken owl pellet. I got to hold the bones. I learned a lot yesterday about animal tracks and signs.

Ira
February 15, 2007
Yesterday I went to the distance learning class to learn about animal tracks and signs. # 1 had a gall; #2 had a raccoon track; # 3 had acorns and a pine cone; #4 had an owl pellet; #5 had bear scat. Then the lady took out a snake and the snake went up her sleeve and it came out the other sleeve. She put the snake up and got out a flying squirrel and the squirrel went everywhere, too. Then she talked more about animal tracks and signs and we said "Thank you"
and she said "Good-bye."

Lindsay
February 15, 2007
When I went to the distance learning class, I learned about Animal Tracks and Signs. The 1st group had a gall, it was a little gall. The 2nd group had acorns and a pinecone. When you get to see a pinecone, it is really neat because if you broke one of petals, you see seeds. The 3rd group We learned about tracks. You can tell what kind of animal track it is. The 4th group had an owl pellet. You get to see the bones in a case to see the kind of animal it was that the owl ate. The bones look like dog bones. The 5th group had scat. It was bear scat. You can tell what the animal ate by looking at the scat. I think it ate fish. Fish is a good taste to them because they have eaten fish for a long time. We got to see a live snake and a flying squirrel. The squirrel had big eyes, but he or she was a cute fellow even if he or she had big eyes. I loved the class.

Will
February 15, 2007
Yesterday I went to the distance learning classroom to learn about animal tracks and signs. I learned about owl pellets. Owls eat it's prey in one gulp. Then owls cough up the bones, the teeth and the fur. My group had bear scat. You can tell what it's been eating and what animal it is. Dara's group had acorns and pinecones. You can tell if you have flying squirrels if you see neat holes in the middle of acorns. Laryn's group had a gall. A special fly goes in the gall and eats poop until it grows up. When it grows up it makes a hole in the gall and the fly gets out.

Corey
February 15, 2007
I went to the distance learning class and saw a real live snake and after that I saw a real live flying squirrel. We had to trace over a map where we thought the coast was. Our group learned about corals and sponges. We learned that a coral has a living creature inside of it. A sponge has different kinds of holes. Brandon, Tucker, and Marco were in my group.

Destiny
This morning, Wednesday, January 11, we went to a video conference. We talked to a woman that was from Raleigh. We had to sit in groups of four. The people that were with me were Haley, Suleyma, and Tori. We learned about sea creatures. My group learned about the blue crab and the horseshoe crab. The horseshoe crab had sharp points and it hurt. We got to color where we thought the coast was. Then we talked about them with the class. Then we left. It was special.

Suleyma
This Wednesday morning, my class and I went to the video conference with the Museum. We learned a lot about the coastal region of NC. A woman in Raleigh was on the TV. Every boy and girl had to hold up their card. We got in groups and had a map and marker. We had to outline the coast on our map; it was long. After that, Mrs. McDermon and Mrs. Gentry gave us a bag of things from the sea. We were told to touch it, feel it, and smell it. Then Mrs. McDermon gave us a piece of paper with the animals. Tori, Destiny, Hayley, and I got the blue crab. When Mrs. McDermon gave us the crab it almost scared me, but it was a fake crab. Then it was time to go. I wish I could hear it again.

Tucker
On Wednesday morning, I went to a video conference in the DL room and Mrs. McDermon let us learn about sea animals. My group learned about coral and sponges and we got to outline with a black marker on a map where we thought the coastal region was. I learned that a sand dollar could move and if you cut off a starfish’ leg off, it would grow back.

Jerry
This morning, our class went to a video conference at the DL class and Mrs. McDermon let us learn about creatures that live in the sea. We got into groups and our group had shark teeth and a skate egg. The shark teeth were hard and smooth. We learned about the Piedmont and the Mountains, too.

Trae
This morning my class went to a video conference. Mrs. McDermon let us learn about sea creatures. Bethany, Sydney, TahTiana, and I learned about starfish and sand dollars. Starfish are flexible. Sand dollars are not. Sand dollars move around the sand in the ocean. Whatever goes under a sand dollar, the sand dollar will eat it.

Sydney
This morning we had a video conference about the Coastal Regions of North Carolina. My group studied starfish and a sand dollar. We outlined the coast with a black marker. The Coast is on the right side of the map, the Piedmont is in the middle of the map, and the mountains are on the left. The starfish’s mouth is in the middle of its body. The sand dollar eats anything that it swims over. I hope I can do this again!

Conner
This morning my class went to a video conference with Mrs. McDermon. First we outlined the coastal plain of NC. But we learned that there are three regions in NC. We live in the Piedmont, and there are the Mountains, too. Then she asked us to look and learn about the things she gave us. My group had a whelk and an egg sac shell. Mrs. McDermon gave us a piece of paper and we read about our animal. My group’s animal was soft and ate little things in its way. We got to tell about our animals. The coastal plains went down I-95 all the way to the bottom of the map. My group was surprised. We had to tell her what we learned. We had a great time learning about sea creatures.

Brandon
This morning my class went to a video conference. Awe learned about sea animals. Mrs. McDermon helped us a little bit. In our group, we had a sponge and coral. In my group, I had Tucker and Marco and Jonathan. I had a lot of fun. I hope to do it again.

Chase
Wednesday morning I saw a shell that looked like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Next my group learned about whelks and there egg sac’s. Then we got to circle the coast of NC. Next we told her where the coastal plains were. Then when we were finished, I was happy and I learned something about whelks that they are little sea snails.

Taylor
This morning we went to a video conference. When we got there, we sat down at our table and we said good morning to Mrs. McDermon. In a few minutes a lady came on the TV and she asked us how we were doing. After she got finished talking with us, she left. Then Mrs. McDermon gave us some things to do. We had to identify them. I hope we get to do it again.

Rachel
This morning my class and I went to a video conference. Mrs. McDermon put us in groups of four. Then a woman came on the TV. She told us about the NC coast. My group learned about shark teeth and skate eggs. Shark teeth are sharp and smooth. A skate egg feels like the outside of a piece of corn. I learned a lot.

Bethany
This morning my class went to Mrs. McDermon’s class. We were in groups. We found the Coast on a map. Then our teacher passed around sea animals. We felt them and then Mrs. McDermon tuned in a movie. A lady was talking to us from Raleigh and we were talking to her. Trae, Sydney, and TahTiana were in my group. I enjoyed it!

Marco
This morning we had a video conference. We learned about creatures. In my group there were Jonathan, Brandon, Tucker, and me. My group had a brown sponge and white and orange coral. Next we underlined the coast on the map. Then we had to leave because the videoconference was over and I had a very good day in the DL room.

Breanna
This morning Mrs. McDermon let us have a video conference in her room. I learned about shark teeth and a skate egg. We outlined the coast and Raleigh. That was a great time.

Tori
This morning my class and I went to a video conference. Mrs. McDermon told us to learn about blue crabs and horseshoe crabs. We learned about the coastal plains and the piedmont and the mountains. It was very fun. I hope we go again.

Anthony
I saw sea shells. They were big and you can hear the ocean and the beach. Shark teeth and skate eggs, too.

TahTiana
This morning Mrs. McDermon showed me sea creatures. This Wednesday I went to the DL room and it was so fun. Next we got the starfish and sand dollar. We touched them. At the end we said bye and thank you and closed up. I had a great time!

Fabian
This morning we had a video conference. We got to hold animals. It was fun. And the map was fun, too. I wish I could do it again.

Haley
I learned that a starfish had a mouth and I learned that sea snails had a mouth. Mrs. McDermon let us come to learn about sea animals and sea creatures. Tori, Destiy, Sulyema, and I had to draw where the coastal area was. We saw a lady on TV. In our groups we had a blue crab and a horseshoe crab. We did three fun things. First, we picked a bowtie and we decorated the pretty bowties. Next, we got water and cornstarch. We put the cornstarch and the water in a plastic bag together and it turned white. Then we got a paper towel that had baking soda in it and we folded it up. Then we put the water and vinegar in a bag and we added the paper towel in the bag. When we shook the bag up, it made bubbles. Last, we sang happy birthday to Einstein and we left. I had a good time.

McKenzie
On April 11, we had a special teacher in science. First, we decorated a bowtie. There were lots of colors to pick from. We decorated the bowtie with stickers. Next, we got a bag with something in it! We felt it and then we rolled it up in the bag. It was hard. After that, we got a bag wtih water and vinegar. We got a paper towel and put it in the bag and shok it up. There was baking soda in the paper towel. When we shook the bag up, we saw lots of bubbles and the bag got fat. Last, we sang happy birthday to Mr. Einstein. I liked the videoconference that we had about science. I can not wait until our next videoconference.

Natasha
My class went to the distance learning classroom. We had a great videoconference about science. One of the things we did was to touch goop! It was hard in the bag. If it was in your hand, it would melt like glue. The next thing we did was put some baking soda on a paper towel. We put it in a bag with water and vinegar. Then we shook the bag and after that the bag got fat. Then some bubbles were in the bag. I had a great time. I hope my class can do that again!

Audra
Today our class went to the distance learning classroom for an Einstein party. First we sat down and waited for it to start. Then the TV came on and a lady came up. She talked about Albert Einstein. Next we did our first experiment. The lady showed us how to make goop. When she was done making the goop, we did our second experiment. This is what we did. We took a paper towel and put baking soda in it. After that Mrs. McDermon handed out a bag with water and vinegar mixed together. We worked in groups of two. I woked with Tameka. She held the bag and I held the paper towel with the baking soda in it. On the count of three, we dropped the paper towel in the bag. When we dropped it in the bag, the bag filled with bubbles. The bag puffed up. It was really cool. I had a very good time!

Tameka
This afternoon my class and I had an Einstein Party in the distance learning classroom. We were going to talk about Liquids, Gases, and Solids. We had to talk to a TV. We did experiments. First, we made a bowtie and decorated it. Next, we made the next activity with vinegar and water. First, the teachers put some baking soda into a paper towel. Then we put it in the corner of the bag so then we zipped it up and watched it bubble! Last, we said good-bye and we left, but we had a great time at the Einstein Party!

Bradley
We went to an Einstein Party. First we made ties and decorated them. Next we had some cornstarch in a napkin. Last we got a bag of vinegar and water and shook it up.

Matthew
Today we had an Einstein party. Today is his birthday.

Hasaan
We went to an Einstein Party. I liked the bowties. I liked the goop. The class made the goop. I liked the last thing we did. We put the paper towel with baking soda in a bag and watched it bubble.

Miriam
My class had an Einstein party. The first thing we got to do was make a bowtie. After that we made white slime. It looked like pancake mix. Last we had a paper towel, baking soda, vinegar and water.

Nicole
First we got a bag that had goop. We had to roll it and feel inside the bag. Next, we made bowties and decorated it with some stickers. Then we had a bag with a little bit of water and a little bit of vinegar. Then we had a paper towel with baking soda. We put the paper towel in the corner of the bag. Next I saw the bag fill up with bubbles. Then it was time to go back to the classroom.

Sarah
When we went to the Einstein party, we got to make bowties. It was fun, too. Another thing that we did was make goop. It was the funnest thing. We loved it.

Chase
At the Einstein party, we learned about science. The first thing we made was bowties. Scientists wore bowties because they used fire and they did not want to get burned! We learned about three different things, gas, liquids, and solids. The first project we did was mix up cornstarch and warm water. We mixed it up again and it looked like mayonnaise. The second project was to make the bag puff up. We put water and vinegar in a bag. You put baking soda in a paper towel and fold it up. Then you carefully put the paper towel in the corner of the bag and shake it and it makes fizz.

Mario
Today we went to the distance learning classroom. We learned about Einstein at a party. We learned how to make a gloop. We learned how yucky gloop is. You have to get a bowl and put some white cornstarch in it. Then put some water in it and stir it up. Now you have gloop. We learned how to make gas. All you have to do is get a plastic bag and put some warm water and vinegar and some baking soda. Wrap it up and put it in the bag. Zip it. See it puff up. Probably you can do it.

Hunter
We went to the Einstein party. It was great. We made bowties. We decorated them. Next, we did step two. It involved gloop, which is like a liquid and a solid. Then we used vinegar and put baking soda in a paper towel. Then we put it all in a plastic bag with water. We shook it up and the bag got fat. Last we went to the classroom and then we went home.

Tyler
We went to an Einstein Party.

Olivia
Today we had a class with Miss McDermon. It was an Einstein Party. FIrst we made bowties. Next we did experiments. It was called gloop. Then we did something else. We put a paper towel in a bag, in the corner. That was fun. Then it was time to go. That was fun.

Erick
Today I went to a field trip. FIrst we got a bag of cornstarch and water. Then we got to feel it and see what it was like. Finally we put a paper towel with cornstarch in a bag with water and vinegar. It bubbled. We had a fantastic time!

Mrs. Hicks' Class - Snakes

Ashleigh
Yesterday my class went to a videoconference with a woman that was in Durham. The videoconference was in the distance learning classroom. We learned that venomous snakes have cat eyes and non-venomous snakes have regular eyes. We learned that snakes can shed their own skin. Snakes also have sharp teeth in the front that curve back and they have small teeth in the bacdk that also curve. So when they catch their prey, their front teeth will go into the mouse and kill him. After the snake kills the mouse the snake swallows him whole. When the teacher had to go we said good-bye and have a great day. We will see you next time.

Leah
On a Wednesday, we were sitting in the distance learning classroom getting ready to have a videoconference. A video conference is when you go and learn about something. Also there were two tv's; one of them you could see yourself in and the other one is for the person that is teaching us in Durham. On the table we had numbers that we hold up when she asks us a question. We also had pencils and little packets with stuff in them. All of a sudden a girl popped up on the tv and told us that her name was Kimberly. Then she showed us a sign that said "37 kinds of snakes are in North Carolina and only 6 are venomous." Next she showed us a snake that was venomous. It was a copperhead. It was red, pale, and black. Then she showed us a rattlesnake. It had some little lines around its tail and it was dark colors. Finally she showed us a snake that was green and had a really big head and huge eyes. The signs were on a powerpoint show. She told us to take out the activities in the packets. In the first activity, we felt stuff. One was spikey and rough and looked like little beads. The next one was slimey. She showed us that snakes are rough feeling, not slimey. Next she told us to take out packet two. There were pictures of snakes. Finally she told us it was time to go so we all waved at her and went back to our classroom. That was a fun day. I hope we have another video conference like that!

Chayna
Yesterday we went to the distance learning classroom to have a videoconference. It was about the lives of snakes. I learned that there are different snakes all around the world. I even learned that there are only six venomous snakes in the world. The rattlesnake is also a venomous snake. When you are walking through the woods there maybe a rattlesnake that you may not hear or see. That is how the rattlesnake catches his prey. Then I asked the lady on the TV when she started looking at snakes if she was scared of them. She replied yes the first time she saw a snake she told her dad and he said that it would be OK and ever since then she has liked snakes. I also saw a corn snake that was the teacher's. She said that it was easy to raise a snake when you get used to being around them. I think that I learned a lot of interesting things about snakes.

Michael
Guess what? Yesterday my class and I went to the distance learning classroom to see a videoconference about snakes. When we got there, we saw a huge TV that said "SNAKES." Just then Mrs. White siad partner up with someone. I walked over to Luis and we were partners. Mrs. McDermon grouped us into groups of two. A woman in Durham came on the TV. SHe introduced herself and started with our lesson. We learned about venomous and non-venomous snakes. You can tell if they are dangerous because the dangerous ones have triangle shaped heads, non-venomous snakes have a circle shaped head. We had to feel the difference of rough skin and slimey skin. We did that by feeling snake skin and slime. They were in plastic bags. That was the best videoconference ever. I hope we see it again.

Hannah
Yesterday my class and I went to a videoconference. There was a lady ont he TV that talked to us about the snakes. We learned that venomous snakes have cat eyes and non-venomous snakes have regular eyes like people. Snakes eat mice, eggs, and lizards. Snakes don't have ears, legs, or arms. We learned about snakes shedding their skin and how they use their tongues to smell. The lady on the TV showed us a corn snake. It was yellow, red, and black. The lady said that she had just enough time to answer some questions. After she answered the questions, she said good-bye to us. Then the TV cut off. That was the best day ever! I hope we have another videoconference like that again sometime.

Raven
On March 9th, our class participated in a videoconference and learned about how snakes shed their skin. A snake is a reptile that has a long, narrow body and no legs or arms or ears. There are only six venomous snakes in North Caroina. We learned that venomous snakes have cat eyes and non-venomous snakes have regular eyes. We got to feel how snake scales feel. Some of the rattlesnakes hide in the woods and don't rattle their tails to catch their prey. A rattlesnake is a poisonous American snake that has dry, horny rings at the end of its tail. When the snake shakes its tail, the rings make a rattling sound. The boa constrictor is the biggest snake. The Anacondia is the second biggest. Some snakes eath other snakes, others eat mice, rats, lizards and eggs.

Jacob R.
Yesterday our whole class went to the distance learning classroom for a videoconference to learn about snakes. I learned that there are 37 species of snakes in North Carolina and only six are venomous. The ones that are venomous have a triangular shaped head. The non-venomous snakes have circle heads. My favorite part was when we got to feel what the snakes felt like. The first one felt gooey and one felt rough. After we were finished we went back to our room. That was an awsome day.

Cierra
On Wednesday we had a videoconference in the distance learning classroom. Chayna sat across from me and we were partners. Mrs. McDermon hooked us up on a TV and a lady in Durham could see and here her and we could see ourselves on the other TV. We saw a corn snake and learned that the bright colored snake is a warning sign of danger. We learned about venomous snakes and non-venomous snakes. That was the best videoconference ever!

Tyler
Yesterday my class went to see a videoconference that was about snakes. Bradley was my partner and we got to feel snake skin and green goo to show that snakes aren't slimey. The lady was from the Wildlife Commission and teaching from NCSSM. She could see and hear us and we could see and hear her. Reptiles have backbones and are usually covered with scaly skin. Snakes, turtles, and lizards are reptiles. I learned this at the videoconference.

Jacob S.
Yesterday I went to a videoconference with Miss Kimberly in Durham. I learned a lot of things about snakes. I learned that anacondas are the heaviest snake in the world. The python is the longest snake there is on the planet. My favorite part was wehn the girl on the tv held up the corn snake. I hated when we had to leave.

Mrs.Hollifield's Second Grade - December 2, 2004

N.C. We learned about a snake and it's life. A snake's body has no fur, but lots of little scales. This snake had black and white scales. We also got to see real snake skin. My group got to see things that animals eat. My group found out what flying squirrels eat. We also got to see animal tracks. One of the tracks came from a deer. I had a good time at the video conference.

Nicole
Today we went to the distance learning classroom and saw a videoconference. We had big numbers to hold to answer questions. Today we learned about snakes. Snakes have black and white scales to hide in the woods. We saw a footprint of a boy. We learned the white stone is a deer track. The other white stone was a raccoon track.

Olivia
Today we had a videoconference in Mrs. McDermon's Distance Learning Classroom. One thing we saw was a real snake on the TV. The lady in the videoconference was in Raleigh. We learned about snakes today, too. It was fun. Next we learned about a footprint and a Pokemon card. When you have an answer, you raise your number card. My number was two. She showed my class some animal signs. When I get home, I am going to tell about the videoconference. I will tell about the real live snake and we are talking to a lady all the way in Raleigh. My mom will be surprised because she has never heard of a videoconference before, but I will tell her all about the videoconference. The best thing of all was when you can feel the things in the bag.

McKenzie
At Mrs. McDermon's we went on a video conference to Raleigh. We learned about a pine snake and about how it sheds it's skin. The deer tracks looked really good. The raccoon tracks looked really good, too. The flying squirrel eats white nuts. The flying squirrel dug through the white nuts with their nails. There was a number for all of us to hold up when we wanted to talk to the teacher in Raleigh. Then it was time to go back to the classroom. Then we did some work in our group. Last we wrote about our video conference.

Natasha
Today we had a video conference. We saw a footprint and I saw a gum wrapper and a Pokemon card. We got to see a pine snake. And some snake skin and cotton tail rabbit. We saw an opossum scat. We got to talk to the woman on the TV. We saw ourselves on another TV. And the woman was in Raleigh in a museum.

Chase
This morning we had a videoconference in the distance learning room. We learned about animals. I learned about a goldenrod gall ball. A fly made a hole in the goldenrod. So the fly could get in and out of the goldenrod gall ball. We learned about a snake; the name of the snake was a pine snake. It was not a poisonous snake. It lived near a pine tree. Now I know how to tell if a snake is poisonous or not poisonous. We connected with a lady that worked in the museum in Raleigh. We got connected on the TV. Mrs. McDermon told us what we would need. She said we would need our five senses.

Lauren
Today our class went to Mrs. McDermon's distance learning room for a video conference. We found out how to tell if an animal was around. You can tell if an animal is around by looking to see if you see tracks on the ground. Another way you can tell if an animal is around is looking for scat. I had a great video conference.

Chris
On Thursday, my class went on a video conference. We learned about animal signs. One of them is "how you know how snakes have been around - there is snake skin." Another one is how you know a rabbit has been around is rabbit skat.

Tyler
We had a video conference. We talked to a woman in Raleigh and we talked about tracks.

Mario
Today our class went to a video conference in the distance learning room with Mrs. McDermon. We saw a pine snake. We also figured out the clue's before we used the paper. We figured out what kind of animal left the track on the stone. The lady on TV she showed us the beaver's teeth.

Hasaan
In the videoconference today at the distance learning room, we learned about animal signs. One of them was a rabbit track.

Anthony
Today we had a videoconference with a lady in Raleigh. We learned about animals food and what animals eat. We leaned that snakes are slithery and that they have scales, too. We also saw deer tracks and a raccoon track. I would say that we know a lot about animals that can slither and run a lot, too. This is Anthony on all about animals.

Hunter
Today we went to the video conference with Mrs. McDermon. We learned about animal signs, scat, tracks, animals eating from a teacher in Raleigh. We got to see a pine snake, too. It was great!

Miriam
Today we went to a video conference in Raleigh. Then we went on a search. We searched for clues. We learned about animals like deer, horses, dogs, cats, eagles, apes, elephants, alligators, bears, octopus, mouse, hampster, puppies, and bobcats.

Matthew
Today I went to a video conference to learn about animal signs and a rabbit.

Erick
Today I went to the distance learning room and I went to Raleigh. I was estatic that the woman would see me because last year I did not get to see that woman. My favorite part was when she pulled the snake out of the bag. Next I learned about the plant in my group. I said did the plant grow upside down and the woman said it did. At Bradley's group, I didn't know that it was a possum track. Finally, she brought out a real snake.

Sarah
Today our class went to a video conference in the distance learning room with Mrs. McDermon. We learned about snakes, footprints, and pinecones. When the snakes are three inches, they shed. The shed skin gets inches longer. We even learned about footprints and all kinds of footprints, like dog prints and cat prints, even ape prints, too. We even learned about pinecones. They grow on trees and squirrels eat the nuts.

Bradley
Our class had a video conference in Mrs. McDermon's distance learning room. We learned about a cottontail rabbit scat and oppossum scat. We also leaned about a raccoon track and a rabbit track. We also learned that squirrels make holes in acorns.

Tameka
Today we went to a vido conference with Miss McDermon. We were connecting with a lady in Raleigh. When she asked a question, we had to hold up our numbers to answer it. I learned about how you can tell when a snake is around. I can tell because if it was shedding and it's skin is laying around that means it's been there sometime somewhere. I also learned about a goldenrod ball gall. A fly could go through the little hole in the goldenrod ball gall. It looked like a stick with a ball inside. Then we learned about deer and the rabbit tracks. I learned that if you get some playdough and put a real rabbits foot then you can see that it's foot has so sharp nails and claws.

Mrs. McQueen's and Mrs. Edwards' First Grade - Oct. 22, 2004

Shane
When I went to the DL room, I saw a big dinosaur bone.
